More than 150 members of the Washington State National Guard will be staying at the Federal Way Community Center through Sunday, June 7, the City of Federal Way announced Thursday.
Between 150-190 guards will be filling various missions centered around infrastructure protection in South King County and possibly Tacoma during their three-night stay in Federal Way, according to the city.
“Yesterday I was pleased to approve the use of the Community Center to the National Guard while they provide a valuable service to our region during this time,” said Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell. “They are our friends and neighbors and we’re proud to provide them with a safe and secure facility in which to stay during their activation.”
The Federal Way Community Center, which closed in early March to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, is currently closed to the public until further notice, according to the city.
Operations of the National Guard are independent from the Federal Way Police Department, the city reported.
