The following is a sample of the Federal Way Police log:
Suspicious package: At 2:35 p.m. March 25, a family found a suspicious package while playing at the Lake Grove Elementary School playground, 303 SW 308th St. Officers found a small box that was completely taped with a vague address listing “UK” as the country. The package was partially concealed by branches and was placed next to a pathway leading to a baseball field. Bomb disposal unit technicians were called and X-rayed the package, which was determined to be safe.
Unwanted items: At 12:02 p.m. March 25, a good Samaritan located a wallet and bag along the road in the 35600 block of First Avenue South. The bag contained needles and other drug paraphernalia. The citizen called police to retrieve the items. The sharps and drug paraphernalia were disposed of. The whereabouts of the owner of the wallet are unknown, although he does have a felony warrant.
Illegal camping: At 11:23 a.m. March 25, police responded to a report of a man unlawfully camping on city property in a protected forest area in the 33000 block of the BPA Trail. After some encouragement, police were able to wake the suspect, who packed his belongings and left the area. The suspect has been contacted several times previously for illegal camping and littering. The reporting party cleaned up the site and others in the city.
Sign striker: A suspected DUI driver struck a street sign in the 31200 block of Pacific Highway South at about 3:30 a.m. March 24. The reporting party followed the vehicle southbound on Pacific Highway South to the Kitts Corner Apartments where the occupants of the vehicle went into an unknown apartment. Repeated attempts to find the damaged sign were unsuccessful.
Wrong-way driver: At 2:17 a.m. March 24, an officer noticed a vehicle traveling toward him in the wrong lane of the 1800 block of south 288th Street. The officer avoided a head-on collision and stopped the vehicle. The driver showed signs of impairment, failed sobriety tests and was arrested for DUI. He provided breath samples with an alcohol level of double the legal limit.
Shopping cart accident: At 3:10 p.m. March 23, a juvenile was pushing another person in a shopping cart in the 33300 block of 18th Avenue South. The juvenile lost control of the shopping cart and it slammed into a wooden carport pole. A maintenance man witnessed the incident and said the collision caused a existing crack on the pole to widen.
Pricey scam: At 2:30 p.m. March 23, a woman in the 28400 block of 16th Avenue South reported that over the past couple of years a man persuaded her to wire money overseas on the promise of repayment. Between 2016 and 2017, the victim wired about $80,000 from various accounts and retirement funds. The victim also made a report online via the Internet Crime Complaint Center. The case was closed since it was beyond the scope of the local jurisdiction.
Reckless burning: At 9:12 p.m. March 23, police and fire responded to a commercial fire at South 344th Street and Pacific Highway South. A witness said a man told him he had torched a camp to the east of the building. The man was found just north of the fire and admitted to burning his camp. He was arrested and booked into the Score Jail for reckless burning.
Shots fired: Police responded to the 1900 block of southwest Campus Drive at 8:54 p.m. March 23 for a report of several gunshots. One slug was found.
Movie money: A manager at Starbucks, 2032 South 320th St., reported that at 9:25 p.m. March 22 a man in his 30s wearing a black hoodie attempted to pass a fake $100 bill. The bill did not have a watermark and was obviously fake. It had the words “use for motion pictures only” on it. The manager told the man that she was calling the police and he left. The license plate provided by the manager did not match the vehicle she described. The suspect did not get any money back or any mechandise, so the store did not lose anything. The bill was seized and booked into evidence.
Snapple scuffle: At 4:30 p.m. March 22, a man was driving a black Volkswagen van northbound in the 31900 block of Pacific Highway South, when he saw a man he knew bent over on the curb. The reporting party said he tossed a full bottle of Snapple out his window in what he claimed was an attempt to share the drink. He said the bottle struck his window causing it to break before it landed on the grass. The reporting party said the other man, with whom he had prior confrontations, picked up the bottle and threw it at the van causing damage to the passenger side door.
Menacing letter: The Federal Way Police Department received a suspicious letter from a known subject at 4:29 p.m. March 22. The subject is known to write threatening letters to public officials. The letter was wrapped in packaging tape and was examined by officers. Nothing suspicious was found inside. The letter was in reference to contact the subject had with an officer and a trespass letter he received, which he felt was illegal. The letter was booked into evidence and a copy was forwarded to the police chief. No specific threats were found in the letter.
TV theft: At 12:59 p.m. on March 22, police responded the Days Inn, 34827 Pacific Highway South, for theft. Motel staff reported closed circuit footage showed a man and woman kicking open the door to a room and removing the TV without the permission of the owners. A tenant of a nearby transient camp told an officer he saw the couple carrying the TV toward Pacific Highway South at about 6 a.m. that morning. He did not know the suspects’ names but said he has seen them in the area for the last two or three weeks.
