Federal Way candidates are finally coming out of the woodwork for the 2013 election season. Here are the candidates so far who have announced their intentions to run for office.
Federal Way City Council
For Federal Way City Council position 2, newly appointed Kelly Maloney has announced she will run to keep her seat. Mark Koppang has announced he will run for the seat. Koppang and Maloney were among 20 applicants for the two council seats vacated in January by Linda Kochmar and Roger Freeman, who were elected to the state House. Maloney and Diana Noble-Gulliford were selected for the two positions. Noble-Gulliford has not yet announced plans for re-election.
As a first-time public officeholder, Maloney is also the director of marketing for Orion Industries. She has worked on economic development projects with the city, including a recent TV commercial. Koppang ran for city council position 3 in 2011, but lost in the primary. He is a national accounts manager for Ampac and a 17-year Federal Way resident. He has been involved with his church and the Marine Hills swim club board.
South King Fire and Rescue
Bill Gates will file for re-election to the South King Fire and Rescue Board of Commissioners, position 1. He was first elected in 2001 and re-elected in 2007. He has served as board chairman the past four years. In a news release, Gates said he wants to “continue to use his extensive budget and finance knowledge to assure tax dollars are used wisely to provide professional emergency services for our residents.”
A resident of Federal Way since 1974, Gates has received numerous accolades for community service in capacities including the Federal Way Chamber of Commerce, Centerstage Theatre and local library boards. In 2012, the Department of Health appointed him to the Central Region Trauma Care Council.
