Mirror staff reports:
Three candidates have filed to run for an open seat on the Federal Way School Board.
Kenneth Lance Barton, Carol Gregory and Medgar Wells were listed on the King County Elections website at the filing deadline May 17. Stay tuned for more information on local candidates.
School board member Angela Griffin, who was first appointed to position four in 2008, has announced she will not seek re-election. Griffin was recently a finalist and interviewed for a vacant position on the Washington State Board of Education.
Griffin sent the following statement to The Mirror:
In nearly five years as a Federal Way Public Schools board member, I have been gratified to witness and be part of an innovative educational system that has the best interests of all children at its heart. So it is with mixed feelings that I am announcing that I will not seek re-election to the Federal Way Board of Directors at this time. I believe that I have made an impact on our local education system through the hiring of a superintendent who supports a high quality and equitable education opportunities for all students, by putting policies in place that have increased the expectations of academic success for each student, and by supporting the efforts to engage parents in their children’s education.
I will be focusing my energy on my family, career, and finishing my doctorate degree in educational psychology. I am endorsing the campaign of Medgar Wells, who is a former administrator on the Seattle and Kent school districts and is currently the principal at a local private school.
I have full confidence he will continue the work of ensuring policies and practices are in place that support the academic success of our students in Federal Way.
Position 1
Running for school board position 1 is incumbent Ed Barney, who was first elected to the board in 2001. Geoffery Z. McAnalloy announced he will challenge Barney for the seat. Stay tuned for more information.
