An elderly Federal Way woman who was struck in a crosswalk on Sept. 12 died of a head injury several days later.

The woman’s family suffered a second tragedy on Tuesday while they were at the woman’s funeral services, when her older sister passed out and died at the funeral home.

Sang Kim, 75, was walking in a marked crosswalk at 11:15 a.m. in the intersection of Southwest 340th Street and 35th Avenue Southwest in Federal Way, when a Bonney Lake man struck her with his vehicle, according to the police traffic collision report.

A witness told Federal Way police that he observed the driver turning left from 35th Avenue Southwest onto eastbound Southwest 340th Street when his vehicle struck the woman. Another witness said upon impact Kim’s body flew in the air.

The victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center and was deemed in critical condition, due to a possible head injury, the report continues. Kim died several days later of her injuries, said police spokesperson Cathy Schrock. She noted the man will be cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian but there will be no criminal investigation.

Numerous family members gathered for Kim’s funeral services on Tuesday at Bonnie Watson Funeral Home in Federal Way.

The victim’s 79-year-old sister complained to family members that she did not feel well and moments later she passed out, according to the police report.

Emergency Medical Services personnel were unable to revive the woman, who has a history of serious medical conditions, including heart failure, the report continues.
