A test drive of a motorhome took a turn for the worse Friday afternoon when a reported mechanical failure led to the driver losing control and crashing into a Federal Way house in the 500 block of South Marine Hills Way.

The occupants of the house were not at home. There were no witnesses to the crash. The driver disentangled himself from the wreckage and wandered the neighborhood looking for help.

The June 29 crash severed the natural gas meter at the house, releasing high pressure gas into the neighborhood and prompting nearby evacuation until Puget Sound Energy could secure the leaking pipe.

The 34-year-old driver suffered a head laceration and was transported to a local hospital for treatment and evaluation. South King Fire and Rescue units were at the scene for nearly six hours. The Technical Rescue Team was called in to assist a commercial tow truck to extricate the motorhome from the house as safely as possible.

Federal Way’s building department will follow up with a structural safety survey of the house. The Federal Way Police Department is investigating the crash.
