Before his arrest, the driver in an early Saturday morning crash pulled his passenger from the burning vehicle.

The Washington State Patrol received calls about a serious single-vehicle collision just after 4 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4. The vehicle was engulfed in flames in the median on southbound Interstate 5 in Federal Way.

The state patrol reports that a BMW 330 was traveling on I-5 when it left the roadway and entered the grass median. The BMW allegedly struck a concrete junction box and sign support column, then caught fire, the state patrol reports.

The driver, a 21-year-old man from Fort Lewis, suffered injuries to his legs in the crash. He was able to get himself out of the burning vehicle and remove his 29-year-old female passenger. The passenger was taken to Harborview Medical Center to treat severe internal injuries.

The driver was arrested for vehicular assault and transported to St. Francis Hospital in stable condition, according to the state patrol. Detectives are investigating whether high speeds or alcohol were factors in the crash.
