At around 1:45 p.m. June 24, South King Fire crews stopped a fire at an apartment complex in the 34000 block of 1st Circle South in Federal Way.
The firefighters found a two-story fourplex, with one unit fully in flames on both floors one and two, according to South King Fire Capt. Brad Chaney.
While overcoming difficulties regarding a language barrier, the crew received a report of a possibly trapped occupant on the second floor, Chaney said. One person even jumped from the second-story window of the burning unit, according to reports.
The crew spung into action and placed a ladder into the second story window. No adults were seriously injured, but the crew found one dog who had died in the fire.
“Due to the quick and strategic actions of the first arriving crews, we were able to stop the spread of the fire and the other three units are still habitable,” Chaney said.
The fire department continued searches for more occupants and did not find any trapped. The total damage of the fire ended up being one apartment unit lost, one child transported to the local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and no injured firefighters, according to Chaney.
“We are proud of the work our firefighters do each and every day. However, today they exemplified the spirit of firefighting with their quick and decisive actions that stopped the growth of the fire, and were willing to risk their lives to possibly save a trapped occupant,” Chaney said. “Thankfully no one was seriously injured but we are still heartbroken by the loss of the family’s beloved canine. Thank you to all our community partners who responded and to Federal Way police for securing the scene so quickly for us.”
A GoFundMe page was set up to help the family affected by the fire.
