Republican Katrina Asay and Democrat Carol Gregory will advance to the November general election in the race for the vacant District 30 state representative seat.

As of press time Thursday, Carol Gregory had netted 44.38 percent of the vote and Katrina Asay had received 26.76 percent to move past the other three challengers, all Republicans. School board member Ed Barney finished with 12.34 percent, real estate company owner Anthony Kalchik finished with 8.61 percent and Boeing employee Jerry Galland received 7.74 percent.

Gregory credits her campaign’s efforts to keep in contact with voters while getting her message out.

“Every year is new,” she said, referencing her 2008 bid against Skip Priest for the position. “A lot of factors from two years ago aren’t there now.”

Asay, the current mayor of Milton, said her next challenge is to get her name and story out to Federal Way as well as the rest of District 30.

“I have to earn every vote, and I plan on doing so,” she said, adding that the primary results show voters’ leanings for conservative candidates.
