Disaster preparedness: Grant money helps three Federal Way organizations

Three local organizations have been awarded grant money by the city to help prepare Federal Way and its residents for an emergency or disaster.

A total of $27,640 was awarded to the Federal Way Amateur Radio Club, Multi-Service Center and the Twin Lakes Homeowners’ Association. The funds are matching grants and originate from a 2008 city council decision to allocate $100,000 toward emergency management activities in the areas of emergency power for sheltering facilities, emergency communications or notification systems and general emergency preparedness.

• The Federal Way Amateur Radio Club received $13,900 to build self-contained portable emergency radio communications stations to be deployed to distribution sites and shelters in times of disaster.

• The Multi-Service Center received $4,740 to develop and equip an emergency communications team.

• The Twin Lakes Homeowners’ Association was awarded $9,000 to conduct an emergency preparedness fair for members of the Association.

Basic emergency supplies will be provided.

In 2009, a total of $41,649 was awarded to St. Vincent de Paul, Multi-Service Center and the Federal Way Amateur Radio Club. Remaining funds total $30,711.
