New business is booming at The Commons Mall in Federal Way, with a new Kohl’s store to open in March and Dick’s Sporting Goods set to break ground soon.

“I’m excited about it and I think it’s a good indication of where we are going,” said Federal Way Mayor Jim Ferrell. “When people decide to invest in our community, it sends the message that they see a lot of potential here.”

The building permit for Dick’s Sporting Goods was filed with the city on Nov. 20, 2013. Plans call for space renovation at the mall, including a building addition of approximately 17,500 square feet for a new mall concourse to house the new store.

City officials confirmed the business will be located near Sears, but said there is not an estimated opening date for the store yet.

The project’s estimated valuation is $1.8 million, according to the permit.

Kohl’s department store recently held a job fair to hire for 125 new part-time positions in Federal Way. Signage for the retailer, located next to Target, indicates the store will open on March 2.
