Mirror staff reports:

The city recently began a traffic safety improvement project at the intersection of SW 336th Street and 21st Avenue SW.

According to the city, the work is expected to be finished in December 2013. Drivers will need to tolerate the current snarls in traffic in the area throughout the summer.

Right now, the city is busy putting in the temporary changes to SW 336th Street and 21st Avenue SW, which include:

• Shifting lanes along SW 336th Street and 21st Avenue SW to allow for construction work along the north side of SW 336th Street, and also on 21st Avenue SW, north of 336th. This configuration is “excepted to last through the summer months,” according to the city’s project update report.

• Sidewalk closures may occur, due to the removal of sidewalks on the north side of SW 336th St. According to the city, during non-work hours, pedestrian and wheelchair access will be provided in the closed lane between the traffic barrels and the curb.

• The city is also indicating residents should expect intermittent daytime lane closures along SW 336th Street westbound and 21st Avenue SW northbound for the next few months to allow for access to the construction zone between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. westbound, and on 21st Avenue SW between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The rest of the projected work schedule is as follows:

• May 15-17: Crews will be onsite to cut pavement and curb for removal, and remove street trees and tree grates on the north side of SW 336th Street.

• May 20-24: Crews will begin curb, sidewalk and pavement removal along SW 336th Street, starting on the east end of the project and moving west, as well as along 21st Avenue SW on the east side of the street, north of SW 336th Street.

• May 27-31: Crews will continue removal of curb, gutter, sidewalks and pavement.
