Federal Way High School AFJROTC cadets Roddel De Leon and Maria Gutierrez accompanied Master Sgt. Willie Smith to McMinnville, Ore., July 8-13 to assist with Civil Air Patrol’s (CAP) National Cadet Competition (NCC) 2009. The NCC consisted of an academic bowl (written test and panel quiz), sports (mile run and volleyball) competition, inspection, unarmed standard and innovative drill and indoor and outdoor Color Guard competition. Cadets De Leon and Gutierrez not only observed, but helped CAP with set-ups and take-downs. Smith served as a judge, adjuncting with the Air Force Honor Guard (from Washington, D.C.). De Leon and Gutierrez both commented that they not only learned ways to make Federal Way’s team better, but they networked, made many new friends and called it “an experience of a lifetime.”
