Bob Celski has announced his candidacy for Federal Way City Council position 5, which is held by Jack Dovey.

Celski, a longtime resident of Federal Way, is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served in the U.S. Army for more than a decade. Celski spent 15 years in the petroleum industry in management and executive positions, according to a news release, and has been running his own small business in Federal Way as a business consultant, nutrition coach and property manager. He presently works for IPC (USA) in Tacoma. He also volunteers with church and Federal Way Chamber activities.

“I will focus my efforts on encouraging job-producing businesses, filling vacant offices and storefronts, and securing the safety of our neighborhoods,” Celski said in a news release. “It is my intent to make Federal Way the most desirable place to live, work and visit in our region.”

In April, Federal Way City Councilman Jack Dovey officially filed for re-election for council position 5. Dovey was first appointed to the council in 1995 to fill a vacant position, and elected to that position in 1996. After a hiatus, he returned to the council in 2003, following an appointment to a vacant seat. He was re-elected in 2007, and served a two-year term as mayor starting in 2008. Dovey, a longtime Federal Way resident, co-owns a chain of Bluewater Wireless stores in the region.

“I decided it was important to have continuity with the council and the new mayor and new form of government,” Dovey said in April regarding his re-election bid. “I thought it made sense to continue working with the new mayor as we make this transition.”

Filing deadline for candidates is June 6-10. The 2011 primary election is slated for Aug. 16, and the 2011 general election is Nov. 8.
