Briefs: Scholarships and education honors

Students earn awards

• Charis Hensley of Federal Way received a $1,500 Nancy and Ralph Babcock Jr. Memorial Scholarship for the 2008-2009 school year at Western Washington University. The scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in English with a creative writing emphasis.

• Darryl Greer of Federal Way received a $1,000 Multicultural Achievement Program Scholarship for the 2008-2009 school year at Western Washington University. The scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership and a commitment to multicultural issues and activities in the school or community.

• Amanda Font of Federal Way received a $5,000 Kaiser-Borsari Educational Foundation Scholarship for the 2008-2009 school year at Western Washington University. The scholarship is given to a student enrolled in the engineering technology program.

National Merit Scholars

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of three Federal Way students who are semifinalists for National Merit Scholarships.

Thomas Jefferson High School students Esther Kim and Rosemary Mallonee, along with Decatur High School student Ronald Hong, are among 16,000 semifinalists nationwide. Students were chosen based on their PSAT scores.

Thomas Jefferson math team

The Thomas Jefferson High School Math Team placed eighth in the nation at Mu Alpha Theta’s annual National Math Competition in Sacramento over the summer. Nineteen team members received trophies for placing 15th or higher in individual competitions. Team member Douglas Chung was named national champion in the alpha logs and exponents category.
