The Biggest Loser is coming to Federal Way. Well sort of.
The Federal Way Community Center is hosting its second Biggest Loser Contest and this year it’s a whole new game.
“I’ve really revamped the program,” fitness and athletics coordinator Kimberly Shelton said.
Oh, and no one will get voted out of this contest.
“We don’t want the drama,” Shelton joked.
Last year the program was just a do-it-on-your-own-and-weigh-in-occasionally competition.
This year, the contest features twice-weekly, 90-minute sessions with each team and a personal trainer. There are also weekly weigh ins and “before” and “after” fitness testing.
Last year’s winner lost close to 60 pounds and this year Shelton said she wouldn’t be surprised to see someone lost up to 70 pounds.
“Of course it depends on how much they have to lose,” Shelton said.
This more intense version means that the price for the Biggest Loser has gone up as well. Last year the cost was $40 and was open to anyone. This year the cost has gone up to $259 and is only available for Community Center passholders. The cost would have been right around $300 per person, however Marlene’s Market is sponsoring the contest and has cut $40 off of the cost per person.
“I think this is a steal of deal,” Shelton said.
Participants who sign up can select one personal trainer — all six of the trainers are nationally certified. Two of the trainers are regularly contracted with the center, the other four are just signed up for the Biggest Loser contest.
Each trainer has a different schedule so participants can pick the time that works best for them. Each trainer will design their own program, so each program will vary from trainer to trainer. The personal trainers bios are available at the Community Center. Most programs will focus around cardio and circuit training, Shelton said. The trainers will also assign homework in between sessions so participants will have to work out some on their own.
The program is geared for anyone who wants to lose weight and is willing to work for it.
The program begins on Jan. 5 and runs for 12 weeks. It’s open for anyone ages 15 years old and up.
“I think the gift of health is the nicest gift,” Shelton said.
