Arson suspected at abandoned gas station

South King Fire and Rescue reports that at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, firefighters responded to a fire at an abandoned gas station at South 288th Street and Pacific Highway South in Federal Way. A passerby called 911 after he saw smoke coming from a broken window in the building.

The fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes, according to the fire district. The fire started in a back restroom where it appeared papers were ignited. Smoke travelled through the rest of the building, but fire damage was contained to the restroom.

There was no fuel on site. The building has been vacant for many years and the fuel tanks removed. Damage estimates are not available at this time. The Federal Way Police Department is handling the investigation.
