At about 1 a.m. Aug. 22, an alleged drunk driver in a Kia Sportage was driving at a high rate of speed when he crashed into a Toyota Tacoma driven by a 54-year-old Federal Way man.

The media release from Washington State Patrol Trooper Rick Johnson said that the Toyota Tacoma was driving northbound on Interstate 5 just south of S. 188th Street when the Kia struck its right rear, causing it to roll into a ditch. In the midst of the crash, the driver was ejected.

The release said that the Federal Way man suffered facial injuries, was transported to the hospital, and was in stable condition. The 19-year-old driver of the Kia was exhibiting signs of impairment and was subsequently placed in custody for investigation of vehicular assault.

The release said that when officers arrived, the Kia Sportage was on its top, and the driver was walking around. The WSP linked a video showing the incident, saying that the video shows a horrific, preventable collision.

“The WSP understands the frustration that roadway closures cause for drivers. The WSP will always do a thorough investigation as that is imperative for the victims and their families,” the release said. “The choices made by drivers that get behind the wheel impaired are one hundred percent preventable and sadly lead to road closures, injuries and fatalities.”

King County booking records show that the driver is still in the King County Correctional Facility, but has not yet been charged in the King County Superior Court. WSP detectives seek anyone who witnessed or observed the Kia before the collision. Email Detective Sergeev at Ivan.Sergeev@wsp.wa.gov
