Federal Way’s award-winning leadership development organization has selected 30 local teens to participate in the Advancing Leadership Youth (ALY) Class of 2014.
The participants were selected from applicants from across the Federal Way area. Applicants had to demonstrate an interest in and aptitude for community involvement, leadership and personal growth.
This year’s ALY class members are: Emmett Butler, Emily Huynh, Alyssa Leon-Guerrero, Tyler Lum, Mary Lou Paule, Nadia Shibly from Decatur High School; James Black, Jack Bull, Aminata Dolo, Jenesis Garcia, Mohit Sharma, Carolynn Tiweyang from Federal Way High School; Lizette Carpenter, Nahom Yonas from Federal Way Public Academy; Emily Storvick from Fife High School; Cassie Neu from the Internet Academy; Justin Kim, Allen Lunde, Lorres Kwan, Autumn Miller, Blake Null, Joseph Park from Thomas Jefferson High School; Carlos Castro, Lily Do, Daisja Flavors, Christina Marshall, Maddie Rogers, Laura Taitano from Todd Beamer High School; Dinh Chung, Kevin Villalobos-Gomez from Career Academy at Truman.
Two organizations have contributed new funds to Advancing Leadership’s second-year youth program, ALY 2.0, for the 2013-14 program year. Funding partnerships allow Advancing Leadership to provide ALY and ALY 2.0 programs free of charge to youth from diverse financial, social and ethnic backgrounds.
The Franciscan Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to support ALY 2.0, which takes graduates of ALY who are still in high school and provides intensive training from leaders in education, business and community development to help them prepare for the transition from high school to college and career.
Franciscan Foundation supports a variety of Franciscan Health System services, community outreach programs, and community-based organizations focused on accomplishing our mission of creating healthier communities and providing quality, compassionate care to all —especially the poor and underserved.
Umpqua Bank presented ALY 2.0 with $2,500 to cover program costs. Umpqua Bank has been involved with ALY programs since 2010, providing financial, in-kind and volunteer support. Umpqua Bank’s target areas of support include youth and education programs that create opportunities for early childhood and K-12 youth that fulfill their educational experience, promote their well-being and inspire them to reach their full potential.
