UPDATE: Auburn police have arrested a suspect who fled the scene after a Federal Way officer shot and mortally wounded his passenger in an apparent drug deal. Police were able to track the suspect to Des Moines, based on information from family and associates, and also because the suspect was a co-registered owner of the black Infiniti sedan involved in the case. Detectives reported they found drugs in the vehicle that were above the amount of personal use. The suspect was arrested Friday and booked for investigation. The suspect’s name has not been released.

An officer-involved shooting Friday at a Starbucks in Federal Way has left one man dead.

About 1 p.m. Jan. 13, a Federal Way police officer headed to Starbucks at 1600 SW Dash Point Road for a break. In the parking lot, she witnessed what she believed to be a drug transaction between two men in a vehicle, according to a police spokeswoman.

One of the men appeared to reach under the seat, and did not comply with the officer’s commands; the officer told the suspect if he proceeded, he would be shot, according to the police spokeswoman. When the suspect reached under the seat again, the officer shot him.

The suspects fled the scene in the vehicle, which was later found at the Quail Run condominiums, located about a mile away near Decatur High School. That’s where officers found the deceased passenger. Medics were called to attempt to revive the passenger.

Police are searching for the driver, who fled on foot and is still at large. The suspect is described as a white male in his 20s, wearing black clothing.

Ed Kelley, an employee at the Starbucks, said he heard a gunshot but did not see what happened. One of the customers in the coffee shop was a Federal Way police officer who took off immediately, he said. Police arrived in droves with guns ready. “She looked shaken afterward,” Kelley said of the female officer.

A man waited outside the police lines for his wife, who was talking with officers inside a laundromat across from Starbucks in the Dash Point Village shopping complex. The man said his wife heard three shots. Federal Way resident Shannon Smith was at Starbucks when the shooting took place, and said she did not hear any shots. However, Smith was concerned about her children, who were in lockdown across the street at Lakota Middle School. Other customers leaving the scene said they did not hear gunshots.

Adelaide Elementary, Decatur High School, Lakota Middle School and Twin Lakes Elementary were placed on lockdown after reports of the shooting. According to the Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS) website, the schools went on lockdown at approximately 1:18 p.m. Friday. The lockdowns have since been lifted.

The officer, who has not been named, is a nine-year veteran of the Federal Way Police Department. According to a spokeswoman, the officer has been placed on administrative leave, as per standard procedure, and Auburn police are investigating the shooting.
