Event organizers announced today that the World Championship of Sand Sculpting will stay open another week. Dozens of sculptures will be on display through Oct. 10 in Federal Way.
The competition features 63 sculptors from 17 nations. Federal Way resident Michael Velling is carving a special tribute to veterans and the United States, titled “Dedicated to Liberty.” The patriotic sculpture stands more than 10 feet tall, infusing the likenesses of soldiers, the Statue of Liberty and a bald eagle.

• The World Championship of Sand Sculpting runs 10 a.m. to dusk Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Hillside Plaza parking lot, 31510 20th Ave. S. (near the Federal Way Transit Center). Follow the signs from the South 320th Street exit off Interstate 5.
