Federal Way police offer the following tips for a safe Halloween.

There are five areas of concern for citizens to consider as Halloween approaches:

• Proper attire: Ensure that costumes fit properly, reflect light and are fire resistant. The costume should compliment the current weather conditions. Avoid cumbersome masks. Do not carry fake swords, knives or guns that look authentic.

• Group activity: Plan your route. Always trick or treat in groups with an adult. Take a flashlight. Stay on sidewalks in lighted areas. Obey traffic signals, use crosswalks and do not jaywalk. Drive slowly all evening; be alert to creatures that may cross your path.

• Familiar area: Visit familiar neighbors and avoid the unknown. Only visit well-lighted houses. Never enter a home of a stranger, or accept a ride from a stranger. If the area looks scary, stay away.

• Treat inspection: Children need to know not to eat treats until they get home. Inspect all candy in a well-lighted area. Discard any candy that has loose wrappings or punctures.

• Alternatives for trick or treating: Organize a Halloween costume party. Seek out community Halloween events such as the Halloween Festival from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31 at The Commons mall.
