Atmosphere:
At Blue Island, patrons sit at a bar-type area circled around sushi chefs at work. Colorful plates of sushi slowly whiz by on a conveyer belt, open for the picking. On this day, there was no music playing although at times there is Top-40s music blaring through the speakers. It smells clean. The dining room is well lighted with lots of natural daylight pouring in through large windows. The walls are brightly painted. The ambiance is similar to a cafeteria.
Food:
The menu consists of a variety of sushi, sashimi, nigiri and rolls. My dining partner (a Mirror staff intern) and I tried as many choices as we could before we got full. We shared eight plates that included shrimp tempura rolls, spicy tuna jalepenos, crab salad, spider rolls, Ichiro rolls, spicy tuna rolls and lobster rolls. Everything was delicious and tasted fresh. We wished we had room for more of the tempting plates that glided past. The plates ranged in price from $1.50 to $3.50 and were labeled by color. At lunch, the plates are each 25 cents off. Our total tab was less than $20.
Service:
We were greeted immediately at the door and told the wait would be brief. After we were seated, our server, Adam, promptly asked us if we needed anything to drink. We didn’t have to wait for our food because our selections were rolling by on a conveyer belt. We began eating immediately. Our server checked on us several times to see if we had any questions or needed anything. He was knowledgeable and answered our questions about the difference between sushi, sashimi and nigiri. He also explained how the food was kept fresh (It is thrown out after each shift).
If work weren’t buying, would I eat here again?
Absolutely. We had a great time sampling all the different items. I will definitely be back for a healthy lunch or an after-work meet-up with friends. — Margo Horner, Mirror staff
