Will the firefighters reclaim the chili crown after last year’s victory by Federal Way police? Who will whip up the winning batch of spicy meaty goodness?

Sample the finest chili in Federal Way at the fourth annual Federal Way Farmers Market Chili Cook-off. The event runs 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24. Tickets are $10 and includes several small cups of chili, cornbread, salad, drink and dessert. The Barry Burnett Band will provide the live music. Proceeds benefit the South King Firefighters Foundation, Special Olympics Washington and the market.

Last year’s event raised more than $3,200 as people munched, danced and basked in the late September sun. The cops swept the competition, winning the top three places as well as the People’s Choice Award. The winning team was led by “Weapon of Mass Deliciousness.”

When it comes to tickets for the chili cook-off, another fierce rivalry has developed between Janice Siebenaler of Heritage Bank and Marty Markey of Umpqua Bank. To buy tickets for the police department’s side, contact Siebenaler at JSiebenaler@heritagebankwa.com or (253) 941-8541. To buy tickets for the fire district’s side, contact Markey at martymarkey@umpquabank.com or (253) 926-5925.

Tickets are also available at the farmers market, which is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays at 31600 20th Ave. S. (near the transit center). The market runs 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at the same location through the end of October.
