Kids in Federal Way will have the opportunity to hang out in a mini-Federal Way — which includes a police station, Chick-fil-A and Pacific Highway.
The Kid Zone was open for play at the Bicycle Safety Event hosted on July 27 by the local nonprofit We Love Our City. Although the official opening date is still to be determined due to some final steps needed for the occupancy permit, Shelley Pauls with WLOC said kids could still play at a limited occupancy, but they’re waiting to get everything squared away before opening to the public.
Diane Larson with We Love Our City said the Kid Zone is not part of the church, and anyone can bring their kids to play. Larson said the Kid Zone is part of a larger community center and is attached to the Family Life Community Church, 32275 32nd Ave. S. Larson said she was inspired by the children’s museum in Olympia, so when the church got its new building, she wanted to turn the offices into playhouses for children.
“We did 15 pretend playhouses in here. All representing Federal Way,” Larson said. “So we have a Dash Point construction, we have an art store, and we got a princess palace. We got the hospital, St.Francis, South King Fire and Rescue, and police.”
After putting in the playhouses, Larson said they put up a play mountain and called it Mount Rainier, and they named the play road Pacific Highway. She said the Kid Zone is an indoor park for kids, so they can still play when it rains or during the winter.
Larson said they have a music center where there will most likely be free entertainment. Additionally, in the back, she said they have “Challenge Island,” which will have problem-based challenges. She said that feature will be an after-school program for home-schooled kids. They also have a learning center for home-school clubs.
“We’ve got a co-working space for parents and businesses,” Larson said. “So we’ve really kind of assessed from the community what they need, what families need, and we’ve created a space where family is kind of an all one-stop shop.”
Larson said the fall opening times are still not set in stone, but she said they will most likely be open Monday through Friday. She said there would be a four-hour play limit, and the suggested donation was $5.
