Here’s a way to keep your kids active this summer

There are plenty of options this summer for kids who want to lose a few pounds or discover a new sport.

The Federal Way Community Center has cooked up several new programs for the summer months geared toward kids and teenagers.

“We were really looking at comprehensively at different age groups,” director Kimberly Shelton said.

In many of the programs, kids sign up as individuals and are put on teams. Many of the sports are also learn-as-you-go, without the long practices and constant game schedules that other sports can bring, Shelton said.

Parents can workout or walk the track during many of the sports programs and still watch their kids.

Passes for the community center cost $61.33 a month for a family of six.

The programs

• Playground Sports is geared for ages 4-8 and will keep kids active this summer by introducing them to intramural sports such as kickball, dodgeball and other sports. The program runs eight weeks, from the Fourth of July holiday and Labor Day weekend. Sessions are on Saturday mornings. Kids ages 6-8 will attend between 9 and 10 a.m.; kids ages 4-5 will attend from 10 to 11 a.m. Cost is $40 for pass holders and $70 for non-pass holders.

• In youth dodgeball, all players sign up as individuals and the staff picks the teams. Program runs 4 to 6 p.m. July 6 through Aug. 24. Cost is $32. League is for kids ages 9–17, open to boys and girls.

• Youth volleyball is 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, June 20 through July 25. It is designed for girls ages 9-16. Cost is $45 per girl. Teams will be created by the staff, however friend requests can be submitted to John.Hutton@cityoffederalway.com

• FIT Camp is geared for those too old to attend traditional summer camps, but too young to be home alone all summer. This camp will vary between structured and unstructured time; incorporating group fitness classes, sports, swimming, climbing, gaming and Friday trips away from the center. There are no themes, no singing, no T-shirts and a lot more freedom within the confines of the Federal Way Community Center. Designed for kids who like to move, want to get in better shape, or just be more active. Drop off between 8 and 9 a.m., pick up between 3 and 5 p.m. Cost is $100/week and space is limited to 15 teens, ages 12-15. Welcome party and initial fitness assessment is 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 22. Training teams are limited to 10 students per trainer. Call (253) 835-6932 or e-mail kimberly.shelton@cityoffederalway.com.
