The battle for chili supremacy in Federal Way has taken a new direction.
The Federal Way police won first, second and third place, as well as the People’s Choice Award, at the 2010 Federal Way Farmers Market Chili Cook-off. This victorious sweep ended South King Fire and Rescue’s chance at a chili dynasty, as the fire department won the cook-off in 2008 and 2009.
Proceeds benefit Special Olympics and the South King Firefighters Foundation. Event organizers are still determining this year’s total, but last year’s event raised about $3,200 for the charities.
Attendees of all ages danced under the sunny skies to the live music of the Barry Burnett Band.

Scenes from the 2009 Chili Cook-off (video slideshow):
Recipe: Super chili cheese dogs
Ingredients:
2 pounds ground beef
2 8-ounce cans of tomato sauce (with garlic flavor)
1 medium onion (optional)
1 package Carroll Shelby’s Chili Kit
1 package of Nathan’s beef franks
1 package of hot dog buns
Directions:
Brown the ground beef in a large skillet (with optional onion), then drain fat. Put beef in a Crock Pot. Add two 8-ounce cans of tomato sauce and one and a half 8-ounce cans of water (as opposed to one can of tomato sauce and two cans of water, as the recipe states). Add contents of chili kit, but only use about half the masa flour. Salt to taste. Add beef franks to the chili. Cook in the Crock Pot for at least two hours. Garnish chili dogs with shredded cheese. Serves four to six hungry people.
