David Crowder Band brings award-winning Christian music to Federal Way

The David Crowder Band is coming to town.

The Christian band will perform Oct. 17 at the Christian Faith Center in Federal Way.

The stop is part of the band’s 32-city tour for the new album “Church Music.”

The tour kicked off Monday in Waco, Texas, the band’s hometown.

Lead singer David Crowder described their music as “not typical church music.”

“We’re pretty progressive,” he said. “Pop rock with some urban. There’s a lot of electronic music. Video game music has shaped our ears.”

He also said their shows bring everyone into the experience.

“People can expect to leave with a hoarseness in their voice,” Crowder said. “We like to get everybody singing. The audience is as much a part of it as we are. The evening turns into something unique each time.”

The band has also earned five Dove Awards between 2006 and 2008 at the annual Gospel Music Awards.

The group is comprised of six members including Crowder, who in addition to vocals plays guitar, piano and much more, Jack Parker is on the electric guitar, vocals, Rhodes piano, noise box and banjo. Mike Dodson plays bass, keyboards and cello. Mike Hogan plays violin and the turntables. Jeremy Bush is on the drums, percussion and bells, and Mark Waldrop is on the electric guitar and noise box.

However, all the members are multitasking when it comes to instruments.

“Anything they can reach is fair game,” Crowder said. “It’s like watching someone juggle.”

There is also Steve3PO, a drumming robot that Bush created, who takes over on a few songs.

“It’s a little scary to watch,” Crowder said. “He doesn’t look like anything human. He did a good job though. He was tight.”

Crowder said their show is about an hour and a half, plus their two opening acts, which are each about a half-hour to 45 minutes.

The band is looking forward to its trip to the Northwest.

“I don’t know if there is a better spot on the planet than the Pacific Northwest,” Crowder said. “But don’t tell my Texas friends.”
