PowellsWood is a three-acre private garden owned and operated Monte Powell.
The Federal Way resident looks forward to participating in this year’s Buds and Blooms spring garden festival, which he sees as a vital tradition for the city. Powell is also passionate about the impact local gardens have on the overall community.
“Open space in the form of gardens is really important in an urban setting. I believe it adds greatly to the quality of life,” Powell said. “The preservation of these spaces, such as PowellsWood and the vegetable garden at the Federal Way Senior Center — these are really important city and community assets. They should be enjoyed by the public.”
Mother’s Day weekend
PowellsWood, located at 430 South Dash Point Road, will hold several events May 10-11 during the Buds and Blooms festival. Highlights include fuchsia baskets for sale (a Mother’s Day tradition), a bee keeping demonstration, watercolorist Sharon Freeman, traditional English tea (reservation required), storytelling for kids, a flower arranging demonstration, an appearance by Ciscoe Morris and more.
The garden’s crew is currently getting ready to plant a large fuchsia collection with more than 300 varieties. But for now, Powell is enjoying the spring blooms.
“The rhododendrons and flowering cherries are just magnificent right now,” Powell said.
