Bonsai and rhody gardens offer spring exhibits and tours

The Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection is open weekly Tuesdays through Sundays (closed Mondays) year-round on the Weyerhaeuser campus, 2525 S. 336th St. Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bonsai are miniaturized, living trees shaped by artists to portray scenic large trees in nature. The collection features 60 outstanding bonsai from six Pacific Rim nations.

Upcoming events include:

• Meet the Stone Guy: From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays in April (April 6, 13, 20 and 27) during the exhibit of “Stone Images IV,” a member of the Suiseki Interest Group will be on hand to answer questions about viewing stones and give demonstrations of carving the elegant wood display bases.

• World Bonsai Day: On May 11, check out two free lecture/demonstrations by visiting artists Robert Cho (“Chinese Style Penjing”) from 10:30 a.m. to noon and Joe Harris (“Japanese Style Bonsai”) from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

• Mother’s Day: On May 12, check out guided tours each hour on the hour, starting at 10 a.m., with the final tour at 3 p.m. A free bonsai Demonstration by curator David De Groot begins at 1:30 p.m.

Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden

In honor of Native Plant Appreciation Week, April 28-May 4, the Washington Native Plant Society is promoting a native plant tour at the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden.

Garden staff will showcase native plants on this hour-long tour, which begins at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 30.

Cost is $10 per person. Guests must register in advance by calling (253) 838-4646 Ext. 140. The tour may be paid for at the door.

Native plants will be available for purchase at the nursery. The garden is located on the Weyerhaeuser campus, 2525 S. 336th St., Federal Way. To learn more, visit http://rhodygarden.org.

PowellsWood

The PowellsWood private garden is located at 430 S. Dash Point Road in Federal Way.
