The sultry strains of jazz will be getting a twainy twist this weekend as famed accordion Murl Allen Sanders takes the stage at Jazz LIVE on Sunday, April 25.
Sanders is the latest artist to participate in the Jazz LIVE concert at Marine View Presbyterian Church.
Sanders will be joined by Warren Rand on alto and soprano sax, Douglas Barnett on bass and Mark Ivester on drums.
Sanders is also an acclaimed piano player and will be performing on both instruments.
Event organizer Jim Foster said he had heard about Sanders quite a while ago, and was able to meet him a year or so ago.
“The guy is just so talented,” Foster said. “On the accordion he’s just amazing. He’s also such a great musician.”
In the past, Sanders has worked with artists like Chuck Berry, Etta James, Peter Duchin, The Von Trapp Children and many others.
Recently, he has been performing his jazz influenced orchestral compositions “Accordion Concerto #1” with Cascade Symphony and Everett Symphony and “Accordion Concerto #2” with Orchestra Seattle.
“They can expect a great entertainer in Murl,” Foster said. “He runs the gamut in the kind of music he can play. He’s played with orchestras…you name it, the guy can play it. He’ll focus on his jazz, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he showcases all his styles.”
There have been about a dozen of the monthly Jazz LIVE events, which are held at Marine View, at 8469 Eastside Dr. NE, off of State Route 509. The event is always at 5 p.m. the last Sunday of the month.
The events are well attended, Foster said. They average about 190 per concert, with the highest attended one in December bringing in more than 300.
“People are very appreciative,” Foster said. “You don’t have to go to a club where you have background noises.”
Foster has also worked out a deal with several nearby restaurants — ARK Smokehouse Restaurant, Browns Point Pizzeria, Gino’s Bistro and the Lobster Shop at Dash Point — where those who attend the concert can bring in their program and receive 20 percent off their dinner tab that same evening.
