South King Fire and Rescue got an extra cuddly donation on Wednesday in the form of 23 stuffed bears from Jodi Sutcliff’s leadership class at Sequoyah Middle School.

Students also took the extra step and personalized the bears — creating clothes, costumes and a personality for the bears.

Sutcliff saw the bears at a dollar store and bought what the store had, thinking they could be used somehow. When she was talking to her students later, they wanted to see the bears, and so all the bears were brought into the classroom. The kids quickly started playing with the extra soft bears, grabbing scraps of fleece that were in the room still from the craft club and creating hats and scarves for the bears. The next morning, Sutcliff saw the Community Food and Toy drive sign outside Fire Station 61 — and inspiration struck.

The students spent the next few days creating outfits and a background for each of the bears. Each bear also came with a name card, with the bear’s name, age, hobby and favorite subject in school.

Megan Hoff’s bear’s favorite hobby is basketball.

Kourtney Johnson made Super Bear: “Any little boy would love him,” she said. In fact, she ended up going out and making a couple more for her young cousins for Christmas.

Sophia Cedeno gave her bear “a really cute look,” she said. “Her hobbies are to go shopping because I like to go shopping.”

Courtney Cox wants her bear to go to a little girl who can play with it.

Kenneth George’s bear is a rocket bear, complete with its own jet pack.

The ideas the students had were endless.

Once the bears were done, the students walked next door to Fire Station 61 to deliver the bears, and a few more toys and supplies, so that other kids like them could have a very Merry Christmas.
