Fun and amusing, this production of “I Hate Hamlet” is well done. A great cast, and wonderful performances, combined with funny dialogue and a quirky premise allow the audience to sit back and be entertained.

The play centers on Andrew Rally, naturally done by Ty Boice, who is a TV soap star looking to invigorate his artistic integrity by moving to New York in order to try his shot in the theatrical center of the world.

Shortly after arriving he rents an apartment formerly owned by the legendary John Barrymore, brilliantly portrayed by Toby Dycus. In addition, his agent, a thick German-accented Louise Penberthy, lands him a role in the Central Park production of “Hamlet.” The enormity of the role in addition to the shadow cast by John Barrymore causes Andrew to shy away with fear that he is not good enough to play the part. However, the ghost of Barrymore makes it his mission to prepare Andrew for the role of a lifetime.

This over-the-top show is well-written with lots of laughs, some good tender moments, and even a swashbuckling sword fight. Ty does a good job as Andrew. His down-to-earth and realistic approach provides great contrast to the exaggerated flamboyance possessed by the other characters. Toby Dycus is fantastic as John Barrymore. His bold and overbearing presence is a believable characterization of John Barrymore’s womanizing alcoholic reputation. Louise Penberthy has a good German accent, although on occasion it is so thick that it can be a little distracting. One of my favorite scenes in the show was a tender moment between her and John Barrymore. Heidi Jean Weinrich plays the New York Realtor with such an over-the-top charm. And Wing Flanagan steals every scene he is in with his wonderful interpretation of the greasy filth that lives in Los Angeles.

All in all this show is a night of entertaining fun and laughs.
