This is in response to Danylle Chalcraft’s Nov. 17 letter regarding the recent Veterans Day observance that was sponsored by the Historical Society of Federal Way and the Noon Kiwanis Club of Federal Way.

Although it is flattering that others felt I was the visionary of this program, the credit belongs to Dave Larson and the Veterans Day Observance Committee. Larson spent many hours fine-tuning the program until it met the committee’s standards — and only until the program had the quality, intent and purpose to honor veterans and the Federal Way community.

We had a Veterans Day Observance Committee of about 16 members who worked together tirelessly for more than two and a half months. We met weekly to create a program that would honor our veterans and Federal Way as well as include the youth as an integral part, as they are our future.

The core committee members were Dave Larson of the Noon Kiwanis Club of Federal Way; Maureen Hathaway and Diana Noble-Gulliford of the Historical Society of Federal Way; Maj. Barry Jones and Sgt. Will Smith of the Air Force JROTC from Todd Beamer and Federal Way high schools; Rick Reece of Boy Scout Troop 342; St. Vincent de Paul; Cub Scout Pack 369; Rainier View and Lakeland elementary schools; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2886. The Federal Way Mirror and Rob Neu, superintendent of Federal Way schools, were also strong supporters.

When you see these people, please thank them for their time and effort to create a quality program that honors our veterans, our youth and Federal Way.

The Historical Society of Federal Way and the Noon Kiwanis Club of Federal Way are looking forward to working as a team to bring a quality Veterans Day observance to Federal Way in 2011.
