I would like to add to the Aug. 1 story about the future possibilities for Dumas Bay Centre.

Seven of us had met prior to the Town Hall meeting to explore ideas. We agreed that focusing on arts classes, for all ages and all disciplines, with overnight stays emphasized in one-, two- and three-week arts camps with public productions on the beautiful grounds at the end would deserve consideration. I also had investigated the possibility of funding for some capital improvements as well as programming, and found enthusiasm and a definite “yes” in support of potential funding.

We already have some groups interested in organizing these camps. Elder Hostel weeklong stays could offer everything from visual to instrumental classes. We are confident, should this be approved by the city council, there would be more funding we could pursue to improve the facility. A priority might be an elevator, since the bedrooms are upstairs.

Way back in 1994, in the Arts Commission’s Community Cultural Plan, many of these ideas were stated, but never really pursued. At that point we identified it as a Community Cultural Arts School. Some of us who were involved then haven’t changed our ideas. The marketing focus could be in that direction. We think it’s unnecessary to try to compete on a resort type level, but “sell” it now for what it is, not for what it isn’t.

I passed around a volunteer signup sheet, and was very pleased that 27 people want to be involved in future discussions on Dumas Bay Centre. We’re ready and eager move forward.
