It’s often been said that we see what people are truly made of in times of crisis.

Our recent adverse winter weather left so many in our community without power and other critical resources. At St. Francis Hospital, we experienced a record-breaking surge in numbers of patients, some without enough home oxygen, others without light and heat, as well as those with significant medical emergencies more commonly seen at the hospital. Many patients, ready for discharge from the hospital, were unable to go home due to weather-related challenges.

Our community in Federal Way and greater South King County rallied to our aid with an unprecedented level of support. Puget Sound Energy worked diligently to restore our power while we operated on backup generators. South King Fire and Rescue stood ready and willing to transport patients home, so that we could make room for other patients who needed care.

The Red Cross and the Federal Way Community Center offered to keep their shelter open as long as we had patients to send them. Lincare made heroic efforts to supply us with home oxygen resources for patients. And Teufel Snow Removal did a yeoman’s job to keep our thoroughfares clear and safe.

To the great people in these organizations and to so many more who rallied to assist our hospital team, we thank you for your kindness. Your generosity helped us provide excellent, uninterrupted service throughout the week and into the weekend.

We are proud to serve this community and especially grateful to have such great neighbors.
