For those of you who are either not aware of it, or simply don’t know what to make of it: The Federal Way Police Guild is endorsing the yes vote for changing to an elected mayor form of city government.
People, this is big news. And it’s good news! I’m not going to re-hash the list of bad decisions made as a result of the current council-manager form of government. You all know the history of our city, and other writers have made all that very clear. What I want to talk about is the fact that we finally have a chance to get this city back on track. We finally have a chance to really see Federal Way become that city “of, for and by the people.”
Oh, sure, we hear those words all the time — and from both sides of the argument. But let’s face it, this election points out how we don’t all share common goals. And we certainly don’t share the same vision for our future. That’s why this endorsement is so important.
The police department represents over half of the employees of our city. We needn’t dignify recent comments from those who are desperately trying to spin this endorsement into some conspiracy theory. It’s time to take the high road and simply acknowledge the endorsement for what it is. After a lot of thought — and with arguably the best perspective any group could have — our police guild has determined that this kind of change is the right thing for Federal Way.
I and a lot of other citizens now ask you the voters to go out there on Nov. 3 and show your support. Vote yes for an elected mayor.
