Has the time come to regroup and renew Federal Way?
Let’s start with the uninspired name. Apparently, the original settlers were so lacking in imagination or too transient to bother with a fine name. Instead they moved on, leaving a couple of miles of interstate highway behind as a memorial to their indifference.
Was Mountain View too big a stretch? How about Tall Trees? A first-grader could have done better than opt for Federal Way. My point of reference for a place name was the acreage my great-grandparents owned and named Blue Willow Farm. That was a magical name for a magical homestead. Federal Way? A bit flat. Definitely uninspired. How do we get loving arms around something so incredibly bland and generic?
Is it really the time to bring out the hard hats and a de-construction plan of renewal and a fresh attitude about urban planning, architectural charm and livability? The vacant storefronts in our retail core would be an excellent and very available starting point. Has any of the city planning staff charged with economic development thought of painting the lower 20 inches of empty window spaces with a festive and colorful holiday theme of Baubles, Bows and Boots? How about strolling musicians and carolers on both sides of 320th Street and both sides of Pacific Highway at Christmas?
The important mission is to get up and do something positive to celebrate our city, our retailers, dealerships and suppliers. Individuals and organizations are asking for a return of our annual Festival Days parade. We do not need to look in a rearview mirror to what was. Maybe we need to look forward with a totally new concept, fresh enthusiasm and a different date on the calendar.
According to the National Weather Bureau, the Northwest usually has terrific rain-free weather the third week of July. The recent sand sculpture competition is an event that could use some hoopla and a parade of winners, a popular headliner at a free concert and lots or great food from outstanding vendors.
Think about it.
