It was on Saturday, Dec. 5, when I opened my e-mail and found word that Richard LeMieux’s little “wonder dog,” Willow, had passed away and there was a memorial service to be held at Bremerton Methodist Church.
I really felt the need to be there for the service, so I headed out for Bremerton.
The service was just as it would be for a human being. An inspirational and loving female minister officiated at the touching memorial service. Bremerton Mayor Patty Lent attended and spoke about their caring community. Major Jim Baker, Salvation Army Corps Officer, and a couple of their other representatives were also there. Baker delivered a wonderful Eulogy.
There was an opportunity for each of those in attendance to share our experiences about Willow. On the alter were items associated with Willow: Pictures and cards, her collar and tags, etc.
Afterward, there was a reception featuring a variety of homemade cookies, snacks, coffee and tea. Everyone talked about their favorite memories of Willow. I met Richard LeMieux and enjoyed getting acquainted with such a gentle and loving man. I appreciated the caring of Richard and all involved for having this memorial. I also thank Nancy Jaenicke, Reach Out chairwoman, for letting me know about the memorial. Nancy and Lika Schaffer, a Reach Out volunteer, also made the trip to Bremerton to honor Willow and support Richard.
Richard LeMieux wrote a book about being homeless and his experiences being homeless in the Thurston County area, and how his “wonder dog” Willow literally saved his life. On Nov. 7, Richard and Willow appeared at Calvary Lutheran for a Reach Out Federal Way Homeless Winter Men’s Shelter fundraiser, book sale and signing event.
