Thanks for featuring the letter on human trafficking last week. I also attended the presentation at St. Luke’s Church by Pastor Jo Lembo and was appalled to learn of the plight of young girls in our community.

By bringing attention to the situation, perhaps we as a community can begin the process of ending this travesty in our midst. Those of us in attendance that evening were pleased to see Mayor Skip Priest sitting among us. His presence emphasized the importance of not ignoring the problem any longer.

Bob Roegner’s article (Feb. 15) on the lack of diversity on the Federal Way City Council is a shining example of political correctness on full parade.

Based on his comments, you would think the two new members had no business on the council. This does nothing to inspire confidence in them as they proceed to fulfill their duties. Frankly, I’m more concerned about their competence than I am their color, ethnicity, or sex.

We need to start examining our priorities and stop focusing on appearances that might make us feel good or look good.

Good government requires more than appearances. I propose that in response to Mr. Roegner’s concerns that we give Diana Noble-Gulliford and Kelly Maloney a chance to acquit themselves until the election next fall. Then, if their fiscal conservatism is unacceptable to the electorate, they can be replaced by candidates with big government aspirations and corresponding higher taxes. Fair?
