Thank you for the opportunity to comment on my campaign for Federal Way City Council. First I’d like to thank my many supporters and my great campaign team who’ve put in tremendous effort, energy and time. It’s been a long campaign and we are just days away from the final outcome. Don’t forget to vote and please mail in your ballots by Nov. 8 or drop them at the ballot drop box located by City Hall.

I’ve met many new people and found many old friends while doorbelling, sign waving and attending debates, forums and events. It’s been fun and a great experience being on the other side of the table. At the recent Highline Community College, American government class candidate forum, I met students, faculty and candidates from Federal Way and other South King County cities. The class had some great thoughtful questions for the candidates. Many issues are similar in our region: the economy, jobs, taxes, services, transportation, public safety and more. The students got it and understand we have tough decisions to make. It will require thoughtful consideration of many contributors, but in the end we have to move forward. I look forward to cultivating relationships that bring collaboration of ideas and solutions to Federal Way.

Working with people, listening to people, hearing you loud and clear: my experience as chair of the Federal Way Arts Commission and Diversity Commission has brought a wide range of people together. The 2011 Summer Sounds Concert Series sponsored by the Arts Commission and 4Culture brought an eclectic entertainment lineup to Federal Way and was enjoyed by people of all ages. The perception of Federal Way as a place to live, work and play will depend on how we plan and develop our downtown core.

Small businesses are born every day. Some even reborn: Pop’s Pizza was bought and sold on Craigslist. The new owner, Mario, has brought back our favorite pizza, the “Federal Way.” But their location behind the Jack In The Box on 312th Street is tough to find. Many businesses have commented to me that they struggle with attracting customers. Signs are one of the best methods for customers to find a business. The agenda for the Nov. 2 Planning Commission includes a discussion of the sign code. Stay tuned.

Volunteering and serving in leadership positions for over 30 years gives me a perspective and knowledge few have in Federal Way. Experience matters.
