Honda on Honda

Have you seen that guy in the red T-shirt? He’s been seen around 6:30 a.m. all over Federal Way on Pacific Highway and 272nd, 312th and 320th streets as well as by the Crossings. Sometimes he shows up at 21st Avenue and Campus Drive at noon and on 320th Street across from The Commons on Saturday mornings as folks head to the Federal Way Farmers Market.

He’s up, he’s down, a smile and a quick wave. He points and recognizes you with a smile, a wave back or a toot toot of a horn as a car passes by. And you know that name, Honda, on his T-shirt, on his sign, Susan Honda for Federal Way City Council position 3.

He’s been a Cubmaster, which explains his animated waving technique. And he’s married to the most committed experienced candidate for city council position 3, Susan Honda.

Do I believe in Susan’s abilities, integrity, commitment and willingness to serve? You bet I do! Susan has over 30 years of volunteer experience where she’s not only had the vision, but the courage and ability to lead. She’s brought together diverse groups with many different views and provided the mentoring, the example, the coaching and the leadership to make things happen. She listens with empathy and heartfelt concern that served her well as a registered nurse. Hearing you loud and clear!

Married for 32 years, our family grew up in Federal Way. Volunteering in the schools, in the church, after school activities and the PTA gives Susan a family perspective. Being appointed and serving on the Arts Commission and Diversity Commission has shown Susan how the city operates. Attending city council meetings, city committee meetings, interacting with city staff and elected officials has put Susan in the position of knowing the inner workings of Federal Way. Susan is ready because experience matters!

Flygare on Flygare

Recently, I underwent an interview by the Municipal League. It lasted approximately a half-hour.  The questions were general in nature, i.e., what are the main concerns facing Federal Way? What would I do as a council member to address those concerns, etc. The outcome was a rating of “adequate.”

However, what was missing were some pointed questions about my experience in leadership positions and other important facets about my background and also inquiring about who had endorsed me.

Knowledgeable people have written to the Tacoma News Tribune and other papers in hopes of rectifying those shortcomings about my history. But I would also like to point out that I was invited for numerous interviews, and endorsements were provided by a number of prominent citizens and government type individuals as well as endorsements by well-known and recognized organizations. I would like to recap those for the readership:

Over the years, I have had extensive involvement with lobbying the Legislature; a clear ability in building consensus with governmental agencies; working with city, county and state regulatory agencies; and more recently a worker safety issue, HB 1794, wherein all courthouse personnel in and out of court are protected from being disrupted or assaulted in the performance of their duties by a Class C felony law.

I helped to block a Level 3 sex offender transition facility from being built in Federal Way, worked hard to bring the south county ballfields to the Federal Way area, as well as Celebration Park.

I have had extensive participation in two state associations, serving on boards of directors, one of which I grew its membership three-fold, which is a reflection of my ability to work with people. I was also the chairman of a state agency committee for 10 years where I oversaw and helped develop professional policies and standards.

Currently, I am the vice chair of the Association of Washington Generals, a statewide nonprofit organization that recognizes people who have contributed to the public good, as well as the military service members. They have helped to publicize an outreach program for returning military personnel suffering from PTSD, and are active in erecting monuments and memorials in honor of those who have lost their lives in the service of their country and community.

On July 21, I spoke out against the proposed cuts and reduction of service for King County Metro at a transit meeting in Burien. I stand against any cuts to our transit services and will fight to maintain them.

In looking over those valuable attributes that I bring to the table, I find it hard to think that I am simply an adequate candidate. I am one with extensive experience to help the City of Federal Way into a positive future for its residents.
