For the love of Federal Way’s libraries | Letter to the editor

I would like to thank Nandell Palmer for his June 13 article on the 320th branch library.

He hit on some salient points that struck a chord with my recent experiences. I typically do not spent much extended time in the Federal Way libraries other than for brief “stop ins” to pick up materials placed on hold.

With the regional branch under renovation, the 320th branch can be busy and crowded at times. Walking in the door one day, I sensed a decided ambience of low-level energy in the air. Trying to put my finger on it, I concluded that it was a synergistic creation of people of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life who are all there for a common purpose and mindset. Despite the large number of people, all those present seemed to be enjoying and respecting this great public resource.

Initially I thought this was a fluke experience. Upon subsequent visits in the last few months, I have been happily surprised to see this “ambience” is the sustained “norm.”

Had the recent efforts by some to move this branch to the downtown core (perhaps next to the Transit Center) occurred, I do not believe this library’s spirit would have endured in the new location. Its personality and spirit is in part attributed to its embedded location in the residential community. Thanks to KCLS staff for your effort, and thanks to Mr. Palmer for bringing this community gem to light in his article.
