Show love to bike riders

I am in my mid-50s and recently purchased a bicycle.

I had not ridden one in over 25 years, but was anxious to help the environment, save gas and get in better shape. I did a considerable amount of research, both concerning purchasing the bike and riding on the streets.

I have since ridden to medical appointments, the library, the grocery store and other errands. I stop for lights, signal before a turn and use bike lanes whenever possible.

I am amazed at how often a driver will yell at me to “get on the sidewalk.” To the last one, on 1st Avenue on Sept. 9: Did it really inconvenience you that much to move to the left long enough to pass me?

The Washington state driver’s guide states on page 78: “The safety of bicycle riders on the road is a responsibility shared by both motorists and cyclists. All bicyclists have the same rights, duties and responsibilities of a motor vehicle driver. Motorists and riders who don’t obey traffic laws can be ticketed.”

On page 80 the guide says: “Bicyclists ride with the flow of traffic and as near to the right side of the road as is safe.”

Think about whether you really want a bicycle moving lickety split down the sidewalk when the sidewalk is occupied by your daughter pushing a stroller with three toddlers. A bicycle is just as threatening to them as an oncoming car is to a bicyclist.

I hope Ms. Charla Evans (letter to editor, Sept. 10) is right and that karma will in fact catch up with you bad drivers. Please — share the road!
