In Bob Roegner’s opinion piece on May 12, he muses over the fact that some mayoral candidates are taking exception to Linda Kochmar’s proposed campaign slogan “retain Mayor Kochmar.” It seems that some of Kochmar’s competition feel this subtle inference (of being an incumbent mayor) may give Kochmar an edge in the race.
Roegner cites the competition’s concerns as being silly and not a factor. To this I say, Bob, I wish it was so. However, I must disagree with you. Yes there is some percentage of voters that actually do the research, make informed discussions based on facts and analysis conducted over an extended period of time. For Federal Way, let’s call that 40 percent to 60 percent of those that cast ballots.
Then there is the remainder of the voter block who I’ll call “drive-by” voters. They never do the research. They often vote based on subliminal catchphrases or negative advertising that floods their mailbox days before the election.
I would not underestimate the fickleness of this group. Quite often, our local election results can be predetermined by a mere examination of the campaign signs. The signs that quickly draw in the viewer’s gaze, and “clearly” get the message across while driving 35 mph will, more times than not, represent the winners.
Bob, I would not discount the concerns of Kochmar’s competitors. I think they have a very valid point. That being said, I think Kochmar’s slogan is brilliant! And she should run with it. Let’s just see how creative the competition can be.
