As the president of Accountability Comes to Town (ACT), I want to say congratulations to Federal Way for electing its first real mayor. I also hope that those who had argued that “just anyone (as in unqualified) could be elected mayor” took notice. We had two highly qualified individuals to choose from. The rest is about letting the people decide.
While voter turnout showed that apathy still exists, it’s a start. The voice of our citizens must be heard. And that brings up the next initiative ACT will be working on. Back in the early 1990s, rules were established that make it difficult for the people to bring about needed changes. We have to address that. Term limits is another issue that needs our attention.
So, these are exciting times; but there’s more work to do. It’s when we’re afraid of change that the system stagnates. We must always seek ways to improve.
This really is a new day for Federal Way.
