Come join the Federal Way Kiwanis | Letters

As I stood watching the Flag Day Celebration on June 9, I looked to see if we had an interclub. I became aware of the Kiwanis presence within so many aspects of our community.

What’s an interclub? It’s when four or more members show up at an event outside of a normal club meeting.

As I stood watching the Flag Day Celebration on June 9, I looked to see if we had an interclub. I became aware of the Kiwanis presence within so many aspects of our community.

King County Councilman Pete von Reichbauer has sponsored this event for many, many years. He is a member of our club. His first speaker was Congressman Adam Smith, who is a member of our club. Next up was Mayor Skip Priest, a club member. Then Federal Way City Councilwoman Linda Kochmar and everywhere-in-the-community Janice Siebenaler, both members.

I saw Deputy Police Chief Andy Hwang and obviously myself as the Assistant Fire Chief. We are members. Judge Dave Larson, Wild Waves owner and community leader Jeff Stock, community activist Bob Kellogg, all members. And, of course, The Mirror’s own Andy Hobbs — a member.

The Kiwanis Club of Federal Way is made up of community leaders, some visible, some not. There are a bunch of Don’s and Steve’s and others that you will get to know that lead and serve in many capacities. Come join us! I challenge the school board who once boasted every member of the board as members. Come join us!

We meet every Wednesday for camaraderie and a guest speaker. We host politicians, sports celebrities, and inspiring people at each meeting. We put on the community Salmon Bake every July at Steel Lake Park (for 56 years). We operate the concession stand at Memorial Stadium. We give many scholarships. We support efforts and people and causes that need support. Come join us!

We meet at Twin Lakes Golf Club at noon every Wednesday and the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. for dinner. Come join us! We thank you for supporting us since 1955.

Gordie Olson, President, Kiwanis Club of Federal Way
