To the 30th District legislators, I am very concerned about a portion of the companion bills (HB 1478 and SB 5360) currently in the state Legislature moving through the process.
Having read the Federal Way Mirror editorial “Protect your right to know” (Feb. 2), I fear that allowing cities and counties to place public notices on their websites instead of requiring them to publish in newspapers will effectively exclude many of the citizens of that government entity from reasonable access to the information.
Many of our citizens do not have easy and reliable access to computers to try to find this information, nor do they have transportation available to go to the designated posting locations.
In addition, the concerns mentioned in the editorial regarding verification, authentication and archiving are, in my opinion, valid. Newsprint cannot be changed after it is printed, but computer entries can. We need the independent access to information provided by newspapers.
Please do all possible to reject the provisions of these bills which would, in effect, eliminate the publishing of public information in local newspapers.
Thank you for your consideration on this matter.
