Campaign contribution limits | Federal Way letters

I have been an active citizen since 11th grade at Decatur High School and now I hold a degree in political science.

As I think about our community’s future, I find myself reflecting about the power of one voice in our local elections.

Federal Way will now directly elect our mayor. As we transition, I want to know that we hear every voice in electing our mayor, council, school board and other local positions.

On Nov. 17, I proposed to the council that our community adopt a Campaign Contribution Limitation Ordinance. This ordinance would cap individual contributions for a specific election year. For example, I could give no more than $1,600 to a candidate for the primary and general elections.

I bring this up because our city does not have any limits on campaign contributions, thus undermining the voice of individual voters. Seattle, Kirkland and King County currently have campaign contribution limitations, and we should as well to keep the voices of all citizens strong.

This is a fresh start for Federal Way, and we can make history yet again. We need to protect the voters of our beautiful and diverse city.
