I have been monitoring the Jack Dovey/Roger Freeman race for the Legislature for several months. Obviously, as a Republican I am hoping Dovey can prevail and bring some change to Olympia.
What is strange to me is why Roger Freeman is even running? As reported by the Mirror, he has stage 4 colon cancer, which needs all his attention to even fight with only a 12 percent chance of survival over the next few years (according to a Google search).
Part of being in office is being able to serve your constituents. I attended the Chamber debate curious as to Roger Freeman’s health and he appeared so weak he was barely able to stand or speak during the debate. Mr. Freeman of course is not campaigning actively in a tight race. He simply is not able to do so.
It is tragic but also a disservice to the people in the 30th District. Let us hypothesize if Freeman wins, most likely there will be a repeat of the last session where he missed 205 votes. (This was another simple search on Google, out of all roll call votes, 90 individual legislators did not miss any votes. Three individual legislators missed more than 50 votes. Freeman missed 205 votes.)
I suppose there could be a request for Freeman to have a replacement after the vote, of course was never vetted during a campaign.
Bottom line is Freeman will not be able to act because of his illness and that does not help Federal Way have representation at the capital. As harsh as it sounds, all his election will provide is kindness to him not service to the community.
